senior Olympics Nationals in Florida. A fellow, swimmer on my master team slammed his head so hard at the end of his 50 back, everyone on deck heard it. he was slightly out of it. i dragged him to the first aid station. They were so happy to have a patient (cause you can't get hurt Swimming, right?). Big bump on his head with just a tiny bit of blood. But everybody else was so focused on their heat. No one knew what happened until dinner that night.

I recently had to have a surgery on my knee because I tore my meniscus while swimming breaststroke. Everyone says swim is a joke but it is just as dangerous as any other sport.
Never in 40 years did I do this one.

Try filling a bowl big enough for your face with water, put on goggles and practice blowing bubbles out under water and tipping your face out of water to inhale over and over. ❤

How do you use a band to assist with the Pull Up? Can you demonstrate that?
Place the band on the pull up bar devise you are going to use. Then place your feet inside the band after placing your hands on the bar. Hang from the bar and then do a pull up.

Vacuum in the lungs? I propose that there isn't a hint of underpressure in the lungs vs. surroundings while exhaling in this scenario. One needs an overpressure or differential pressure to move gases around, so for the inhalation one will have to generate a lower pressure within the lungs versus the free atmosphere. But this differential is is in the tens of millibars, far from the roughly thousand millibars of a vacuum compared to sea-level pressure. AND this underpressure is not generated by a *complete* exhalation of gases from the lungs. Healthy and alive humans are generally unable to completely evacuate their lungs. The underpressure in the lungs is typically created by expanding the chest cavity. Not by a previous, vigorous exhalation. True: inhaling is easier after exhaling previously. The explanation of how this might work could have been better considering that Erika claims to be a U.S. Masters Swimming Level 2 Coach. Other than that a nice, short video. Thank you

My Masters region has no coach and no organized swim events. The organizers only care about swimmers with previous collegiate swimming experience. They're very arrogant and unfriendly. Very much so. I can match many of the times in my age group, but nobody will tell me how to sign up for a meet, where they're held, etc. We need an alternative to Masters in my state.

Your arms should not bend during your flip turn (freestyle and backstroke). As you approach the wall and take your last stroke, both arms should be straight, at your side, and pointing to the opposite wall. That is where they should stay. As you lower your head for your tuck position, the power from using leverge from straight arms to get your hips and legs over to the wall is much greater than from bent arms. That technique is also much more efficient since yours arms are alread straight and facing the opposite direction as your legs push off the wall. Regardless of any motion or position your arms may make during your flip, you want them straight and facing the direction of you want to go as you leave the wall. If your arms are bending during your turn, you are wasting precious time and enegy as you fight water resistance to straighten them out for your push off the wall. This technique takes a little practice, but you'll be impressed with the results. Watch other swimmers underwater as they do their turns and you will see clearly how ineffecient their turns are.
Breaking your arms at the elbow will aid in flipping your body over faster during a flip turn.
@@USMastersSwimming You can bend your arms whenever you want going into the turn, but If your arms are still bent while your feet are on the wall, you will obviously spend time and effort to straighten them as you push off the wall.

I think you should clarify that the cross body arm and leg relationship is that the downward kick takes place at the same time as opposite arm recovery and entry, not the underwater pull phase. There are videos showing Katie Ledecky and Chloe Sutton demonstrating this. Search for 2 beat freestyle kick videos.

My ears are trashed now, and I get vertigo from flip turns. How do I come back from this?
Open water swimming is an option. No flip turns required. Look around for local competitions or local groups that train open water. Training open water is a little more niche but there are groups that do it. Long course pools also halve the number of turns you need. Finally, some people do exclusively open turns, no flip turns, even for freestyle, to avoid this.

Thanks to Coach Lepinski! I had a really bad time "feeling" the dolphin ondulation and most videos go straight to the flow drill but that is not ideal when trying to feel of the stroke and ondulation. These exercises in the video are fantastic to start getting the body and mind the feeling of the ondulation.
